Arizona Democratic Representative Raúl Grijalva has passed away at 77 due to complications from cancer treatment, his congressional office confirmed on Thursday Grijalva, who revealed his cancer diagnosis in April 2024, passed away Thursday morning. His office described him as kind, humble, and deeply committed to equality. Known for his generosity and love of music, he was widely respected across party lines.

Elected to Congress in 2002, Grijalva played a key role on the House Natural Resources Committee, advocating for environmental protections. He was also chair emeritus of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. Representing a Democratic district near the US-Mexico border, he secured his twelfth term in November with a decisive victory.
His passing follows the recent death of Texas Rep. Sylvester Turner. House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries called Grijalva’s death a significant loss, stating that the nation had "lost a giant."
