At least eight people, including four journalists, were killed on Monday in a strike on Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza. Among the victims was Mariam Dagga, 33, a freelancer for the Associated Press and other outlets, who had been reporting on the worsening humanitarian crisis, including children dying of starvation despite no prior health conditions. Al Jazeera confirmed the death of its journalist Mohammed Salam, while Reuters reported that its contractor Hussam al-Masri was also killed, and photographer Hatem Khaled was injured.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has described the ongoing Israel-Hamas war as one of the deadliest conflicts for media workers, with 192 journalists killed in Gaza over the 22-month war—starkly higher than the 18 journalist deaths recorded in the Russia-Ukraine war. Both the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office and military declined to comment on the hospital strike, which has drawn further attention to the mounting risks faced by journalists in conflict zones.
