A series of earthquakes struck Afghanistan on Thursday, deepening the country’s ongoing humanitarian crisis. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported a magnitude 5.8 quake late at night, with its epicenter at a depth of 160 km, followed by an earlier tremor of magnitude 4.8 in the morning. Both quakes rattled eastern Afghanistan, already devastated by recent floods.

The World Food Programme (WFP) confirmed that over 1,400 people have died and more than 3,000 injured in Kunar and Nangarhar provinces. Emergency aid, including food supplies and high-energy biscuits, has begun arriving, with additional flights scheduled. Relief efforts face hurdles due to blocked roads, rugged terrain, and repeated aftershocks.
India has also extended support, with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announcing the airlift of 21 tonnes of relief materials, including tents, medicines, blankets, and essential supplies, to Kabul, as global concern grows over Afghanistan’s worsening crisis.
