Decoding nutrition labels is a vital step toward making informed food choices. Start by checking the serving size, as all values listed are based on this portion. Next, review the calories to understand the energy you’ll gain per serving. Focus on nutrients to limit, such as saturated fat, trans fat, sodium, and added sugars—high levels of these can contribute to health risks if consumed excessively.

Then, look at nutrients to prioritize, including dietary fiber, protein, vitamins, and minerals, which support overall well-being. The % Daily Value (%DV) helps you assess whether a nutrient is high (20% or more) or low (5% or less) based on a 2,000-calorie diet. Pay attention to ingredient lists as well, since items are ordered by weight, with the largest amounts first. By carefully reading and comparing labels, you can choose foods that better align with your health goals and nutritional needs.
