Oral health is closely linked to overall health, as the mouth serves as a gateway to the body. Poor oral hygiene can lead to issues such as gum disease, which has been associated with serious conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory infections. Bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream, contributing to inflammation and increasing the risk of cardiovascular problems.

Additionally, conditions like periodontitis can make it harder to control blood sugar levels, worsening diabetes symptoms. Poor oral health has also been linked to pregnancy complications, including premature birth and low birth weight.

Maintaining good oral hygiene—brushing, flossing, and regular dental checkups—can help prevent these risks. A healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals, particularly calcium and vitamin D, supports strong teeth and gums. By prioritizing oral health, individuals can reduce their risk of systemic diseases and improve their overall well-being, emphasizing the strong connection between oral and general health.
