Hours after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a “permanent” 25% tariff on auto imports, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney condemned it as a “direct attack” on Canada. He vowed to defend the country’s workers and industries but refrained from announcing immediate retaliatory measures, stating he needed to review the executive order in detail.

Carney, who is temporarily leaving his election campaign to chair a special Cabinet committee on U.S. relations, called the tariffs unjustified. He highlighted that Canada’s auto sector directly employs 125,000 workers and supports nearly 500,000 more.
In response, Carney announced a CA$2 billion ($1.4 billion) “strategic response fund” to protect affected jobs. He criticized Trump’s broader trade war, which has already imposed tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum and threatened further restrictions. Carney warned that these policies harm American consumers and workers, pointing to declining U.S. consumer confidence as uncertainty in global trade escalates.
