China’s Ministry of Commerce announced on Friday that it is assessing the situation after multiple recent U.S. attempts to initiate tariff discussions, Xinhua reported. A ministry spokesperson emphasized that the trade and tariff disputes were unilaterally initiated by the U.S. and that genuine dialogue requires Washington to take concrete actions—such as lifting unilateral tariffs and correcting its practices.

The spokesperson added that U.S. discussions about tariff adjustments are noted, but any talks lacking meaningful steps would reflect insincerity and damage mutual trust.

Meanwhile, China’s Foreign Ministry denied U.S. President Donald Trump’s claim that Chinese President Xi Jinping had called him, stating no recent discussions have occurred. Spokesperson Guo Jiakun clarified that no consultations are underway and the last confirmed call between the two leaders occurred on January 17.

According to a White House fact sheet, Chinese tariffs on U.S. imports have reached up to 245%, up from 145%, reflecting escalating retaliatory measures.
