China has publicly revealed details about its powerful DF-5B intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) for the first time, surprising many due to the country’s traditionally secretive nuclear stance. This revelation comes amid rising tensions with the U.S. over trade issues. The DF-5B, a major upgrade from the Cold War-era DF-5, features MIRV (Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicle) technology, allowing it to carry 6–10 nuclear warheads, each capable of independent targeting.

It also boasts satellite-assisted navigation for improved accuracy—reportedly striking within 500 meters of a target. At 32.6 meters long and weighing 183 tons, the missile can deliver a 3–4 megaton blast over a range of 12,000 km, reaching the U.S. or Europe. The DF-5 series has been central to China’s nuclear deterrent since 1981. China currently holds over 600 nuclear warheads, projected to exceed 1,000 by 2030. Despite its arsenal, Beijing maintains a "No First Use" policy and avoids targeting non-nuclear nations.
