Chinese scientists have identified a new bat coronavirus, HKU5-CoV-2, which has the potential to infect humans. The virus, discovered in bats in China, uses the same ACE2 receptor as SARS-CoV-2, the virus behind COVID-19.

The research, led by virologist Shi Zhengli at the Guangzhou Laboratory, was published in the journal Cell. Despite its ability to enter human cells in lab experiments, HKU5-CoV-2 does not bind as efficiently as SARS-CoV-2, making human infection less likely.
The virus belongs to the merbecovirus subgenus, which includes the MERS virus. Researchers also identified monoclonal antibodies and antiviral drugs that could target the virus.
Experts like Michael Osterholm downplayed the threat, citing existing immunity to similar viruses. Another study by University of Washington and Wuhan University also found no efficient human binding of the virus.
While more research is needed, scientists caution against exaggerating the risk of a new pandemic.
