A devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar’s Mandalay region on Friday, causing widespread destruction. The tremors were felt across Thailand, Bangladesh, China, and parts of India. Myanmar’s ruling military declared a state of emergency in six regions, requesting international aid.

Rescue operations are ongoing, with reports of hundreds of casualties and significant damage to infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and public buildings. In Bangkok, a 30-story under-construction tower collapsed, killing at least three workers and trapping many others. Thai authorities have declared the capital a disaster area.

Hospitals in Myanmar’s Naypyidaw are overwhelmed, treating numerous injured victims. The Red Cross warns of power outages hampering rescue efforts in Mandalay, Sagaing, and southern Shan state. Meanwhile, India’s PM Modi has assured assistance to Myanmar and Thailand.

The earthquake, the strongest globally since 2023, also triggered mild tremors in Yunnan, China, and northeast India. Despite the destruction, no tsunami alert has been issued.
