In the wake of the tragic Air India crash on June 12 that claimed nearly 260 lives, the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has formed a high-level, multi-disciplinary committee to ensure such disasters do not recur. Chaired by the Union Home Secretary, the panel has a three-month deadline to submit a comprehensive report.

The committee’s mandate includes analysing the root causes—ranging from human error and mechanical failure to weather and regulatory lapses—and formulating standard operating procedures (SOPs) to prevent and manage such incidents. It will evaluate emergency responses, assess coordination between state and central agencies, and recommend policy, operational, and training reforms.
The panel includes senior officials from civil aviation, disaster management, intelligence, police, and defence, along with aviation experts and legal advisors. It will have full access to flight data, crew interviews, ATC logs, and may coordinate with international bodies where necessary.
