Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu set a new world record by holding a marathon press conference for nearly 15 hours, his office confirmed on Sunday. The session, which began at 10:00 am (0500 GMT) on Saturday, lasted 14 hours and 54 minutes with brief pauses for prayers. The previous record for the longest press conference was held by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who spoke for 14 hours in 2019. Muizzu's conference also coincided with World Press Freedom Day, emphasizing the vital role of the press and the importance of factual reporting.

Muizzu addressed a wide range of topics, answering questions from both journalists and members of the public. The event also highlighted the Maldives' rise in the 2025 World Press Freedom Index, moving up two places to 104th. This follows a tradition of world-record-setting events in the Maldives, including a 2009 underwater cabinet meeting held by Muizzu's predecessor to raise awareness about climate change.
