Pope Francis will be discharged on Sunday after spending over a month at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital for treatment of double pneumonia, according to Dr. Sergio Alfieri, head of his medical team. The 88-year-old pontiff has been in hospital since February 14, marking his longest stay since becoming pope in 2013.

Dr. Alfieri confirmed that Francis is in stable condition but will continue medication and require at least two months of convalescence. Despite his extended absence, the Vatican has kept his presence alive through audio messages and images.
On Sunday, before leaving the hospital, Pope Francis is expected to greet well-wishers from the hospital balcony and offer a blessing at the Angelus prayer, his first public appearance in weeks.
Despite his health struggles, the pope recently approved a three-year reform process for the Catholic Church, focusing on increasing women’s roles and involving non-clergy members in governance.
