More than three years into the war between Russia and Ukraine, a potential step toward de-escalation has emerged. Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to halt attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities for 30 days after a conversation with former U.S. President Donald Trump. However, this falls short of Trump’s proposed 30-day ceasefire, which Ukraine had already accepted and would have included frontline battles.

Throughout the conflict, Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukraine’s energy grid, while Ukraine has struck Russian oil installations with drones. Despite the new agreement, doubts remain over its duration and effectiveness.
Tensions persist, as Russia claimed on Tuesday that it repelled a Ukrainian ground assault on the Belgorod region. On Wednesday, a fire broke out at a Russian oil depot, reportedly caused by debris from a downed Ukrainian drone. Meanwhile, Ukraine accused Russia of rejecting a U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal and launching fresh strikes on civilian infrastructure.
