Taiwan President Lai Ching-te addressed the recent 32% U.S. tariff on Taiwanese imports, outlining a five-pronged strategy to mitigate its impact without resorting to retaliation. Stressing Taiwan’s resilience, he said exports to the U.S. totaled USD 111.4 billion last year, with ICT and electronics making up 65.4%.

His strategy includes improving reciprocal tariff rates through negotiations led by Vice Premier Cheng Li-chiun, supporting affected industries with 20 new measures, and advancing medium- and long-term economic plans focused on diversifying markets and strengthening Taiwan’s industrial ecosystem.

He also proposed a “Taiwan plus the US” initiative to boost investment and enhance the local business environment while expanding global reach. The final measure involves industry listening tours to gather feedback and swiftly address concerns.

Reaffirming that Taiwan will not impose retaliatory tariffs, Lai urged national unity, highlighting past economic resilience and calling on lawmakers to support efforts to safeguard Taiwan’s export-led economy.
