U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he would double tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum from 25% to 50%, escalating trade tensions between the two nations. The move came in response to Ontario’s decision to impose a 25% surcharge on electricity exports to the U.S.

Following Trump’s announcement, Ontario Premier Doug Ford revealed that U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick had reached out, prompting Ontario to withdraw the surcharge. Ford expressed optimism that the U.S. would also reconsider its tariff increase.
Trump defended his decision, stating on Truth Social that Canada was “one of the highest tariffing nations in the world” and that his administration was committed to protecting American industries.
The tariff hike has rattled financial markets, fueling fears of economic instability. Despite growing pressure to boost economic confidence, Trump continues to advocate for aggressive trade policies as a negotiation tactic.
