In a surprise move, Donald Trump announced plans to resurrect Alcatraz, the notorious prison island off San Francisco, citing its symbolic power for “law and order.” The directive, posted on Truth Social, orders federal agencies to reopen and expand the facility to house “America’s most ruthless and violent offenders.” Trump, appearing inspired more by Hollywood than policy, likened Alcatraz to a cinematic icon, referencing films like Escape from Alcatraz, which aired recently in South Florida.

“It’s horrible, beautiful, strong, miserable, weak—it has everything,” he said. Critics, including Nancy Pelosi, called the plan unserious, especially as other prisons close due to cost and deterioration. Alcatraz, once home to infamous criminals like Al Capone, shut down in 1963 and now draws over a million tourists annually. Despite Trump’s claims, five escapees were never found and there are no shark attacks on record. The Bureau of Prisons is currently evaluating feasibility under Trump’s directive.
