New U.S. tariffs proposed under President Donald Trump could cost American semiconductor equipment makers over $1 billion annually, according to industry estimates recently shared with lawmakers and officials in Washington. Major players like Applied Materials, Lam Research, and KLA could each face around $350 million in losses. Smaller firms such as Onto Innovation may also suffer multimillion-dollar hits. These costs stem from lost sales of less advanced tools to international rivals, finding new suppliers for intricate components, and added personnel for tariff compliance.

The chipmaking equipment sector, already reeling from former President Joe Biden’s export controls targeting China, now faces further pressure as the Trump administration weighs additional duties. Officials met with executives and SEMI, a global trade group, to discuss the implications. While the final tariff structure remains unclear, industry leaders warn that complex chip tools make estimating exact costs difficult. Applied did not comment; KLA and Lam declined to respond.
