The United Kingdom is intensifying its national security measures by introducing new restrictions on Russian influence. From July 1, individuals operating under Russian state direction in the UK must register their activities under the Foreign Influence Registration Scheme (FIRS). Security Minister Dan Jarvis emphasized Russia’s growing threat, citing incidents like the 2018 Salisbury nerve agent attack and cyber operations against MPs.

Failure to comply with FIRS could result in penalties of up to five years in prison. The policy aims to enhance transparency across sectors, including business and academia, with a three-month grace period for existing arrangements.

Iran was the first country listed under FIRS earlier this month, and discussions continue about adding China. The UK government plans to collaborate with institutions ahead of enforcement. By implementing this measure, the UK joins allies like the US and Australia in countering foreign influence amid escalating global tensions.
